Burlington

Burlington is a Middlesex County town about 13 miles northwest of Boston with a population of approximately 22,876. Burlington was settled in 1641 and incorporated in 1799. It is an industrial suburb today even though it remained agricultural throughout much of its history (as expansion of railroads did not extend to the town). Burlington has its current character as a result of Route 128 being built, which caused the town to experience extensive growth within a very short period of time.

The social impact of rapid industrial growth, like that that Burlington experienced, often involves an increase in crime, including drug-related crimes. Massachusetts drug crimes include:

  • Possession
  • Possession with intent
  • Distribution
  • Trafficking
  • Paraphernalia
  • School zone violations

All Massachusetts drug crimes are serious, and the consequences of having a drug offense on one's criminal record can be devastating. Not only can some drug charges carry mandatory jail sentences, but they can also affect one's life in a host of other ways. One might become unable to find employment, get into college or enter the military. There is also a variety of immigration issues associated with drug charges. With so much at stake, it is essential to retain a drug crimes lawyer with skill and experience when charged with any drug crime.

There are a number of defense strategies that may be used to fight drug charges. For example, in an overwhelming amount of drug cases, charged individuals have been subjected to illegal searches and seizures at the hands of law enforcement. One of the first steps that a defense attorney will take is to explore the legality of how police obtained evidence and move to suppress evidence on Fourth Amendment grounds. Successful motions to suppress often lead to dismissal of the charges. Frequently, defense lawyers will also investigate whether a client "possessed" the drugs within the meaning of the law. When clients have underlying drug abuse issues that have been addressed through treatment, a defense lawyer may be able to convince the prosecution to dismiss the case. It is invaluable to have the representation of an experienced criminal defense attorney who is familiar with every line of attack.
